To fully understand kinetic isotope effects, we must understand the isotope reactions at the molecular level. This paper shows how the kinetic isotope effects associated to hydroxylation (CO2 + OH- à HCO3-) contribute to kinetic effects in carbonates.

In this manuscript I reinterpret published triple oxygen isotope data from four recent ∆17O papers on ancient cherts. I show how elevated ancient pCO2 that counterbalanced the faint young sun modified seawater triple oxygen isotope compositions in a way consistent with the chert ∆17O data.

This paper came out of a fruitful collaboration between the Cologne and Cambridge working groups. While we had focused on the systematics, they directly jumped to the applications. Together we show that relative humidity was 30% lower in the Younger Dryas than it is today in northern Spain.
