Geomorphological tectonic evolution of the Middle Rhine Valley – Approaches to better geochronological dating of the Rhine terraces
The one-day field trip to the Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching between Koblenz and Bingen, aims to introduce the participants to the geomorphological landscape evolution of the Middle Rhine Valley and to delve into ongoing geochronological attempts to add to the hitherto highly controversial history of river incision and uplift.
The excursion focuses on deciphering the geomorphological processes that have shaped the valley's terrain. The sinuous path of the Rhine River, coupled with the imposing cliffs, serve as a visible narrative of the erosional and depositional forces at play over geological time.
Participating scientists will engage in a detailed examination of landforms and rock formations, seeking to understand the underlying processes responsible for the valley's distinctive features. The interplay of tectonic forces, river dynamics, and climatic influences contribute to the formation of the region's topography. Ongoing geochronological work will be the main objective during this excursion.
