Weyland Collection

Prof. Dr. Hermann Weyland (1888-1974) taught and conducted research as an honorary professor at the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne from 1931 to 1963. His main occupation was as a senior employee at Bayer AG from 1915 to 1952.
Since the 1920s Weyland collected fossil and recent plants, which are the basis of many of his own and other publications. The collection is known for its Devonian plant fossils, especially from the Rhenish Slate Mountains.
Together with Walther Gothan (honorary professor at the University of Berlin) he published the "Lehrbuch der Paläobotanik", which appeared in several editions.

The Cologne Weyland collection contains about 6000 specimens from the early Paleophytic to the Quaternary and is currently being re-inventoried. Partial collections of Recent seeds, herbaria and specimens from the Rott site (near Hennef; Oligocene) have meanwhile been transferred to the Goldfuß Museum of the Steinmann Institute for Paleontology, University of Bonn.
